When it comes to the subcompact segment, it's essential for vehicles to have these three qualities: spacious, efficient and budget-friendly. However, this shouldn’t be all a subcompact car has to offer! The 2018 Kia Rio teaches its competitors a lesson, boasting not only a smart use of space, excellent fuel economy and a great value, but also a range of other benefits that Houston shoppers are bound to fall in love with.
“Value has always been a core tenet for the Kia brand and the all-new Rio sedan and 5-door continue to underscore our commitment to those buyers looking for an entry-level vehicle but desire more than what the subcompact segment currently offers,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president of product planning, KMA.
A Subcompact Car That Looks as Good as It Rides
Regardless of whether you prefer the classic sedan body style or the sporty hatch, you’ll find that the 2018 Rio is lower, wider and longer, adding even more space to the cabin. In fact, the Rio boasts one of the roomiest cabins in its class with 89.9-90.5 cubic feet of interior space, depending on the model. The car’s cargo space is also highly impressive at 13.7 cu. ft. (sedan) and 17.4 cu. ft. (hatch).
These changes to the wheelbase also give the car a sportier, more aggressive look that Kia says “underscores [it’s] fun-to-drive side.” This style update is further complemented by new headlights, taillights and the latest incarnation of Kia’s iconic tiger-nose grille.
More Comfortable for Your Commute
Moving inside, the Rio receives several updates, starting with a redesigned instrument panel with a new digital driver information display. On top of that, the center stack controls and media have been slightly shifted in order to be more streamlined and driver-intuitive. Drivers with long commutes will also appreciate the seats, which have been redesigned to offer even more comfort and support.
The Rio also steps up its tech-savviness, featuring equipment like Bluetooth, satellite radio, a seven-inch touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and UVO3 infotainment on select models.
You’ll Want to Take It for a Test Drive as Soon as It Arrives
The 2018 Rio shows off with a Gamma 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine that has been enhanced to boost fuel economy numbers. This redesigned engine is rated at 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque, and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
According to the automaker, the Rio also rides on an all-new platform with a MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear axle, and a new spring and damper setup. The result of these changes is a more refined driving experience with improved handling and comfort.
