Protect Your Car in Winter
What's it take to winterize a car? What's going to give you your best chance to make it home in harsh weather conditions safely?
1. Tire checks: Winter tires are specially designed for harsh weather patterns that arise in winter. Even if you don't purchase a set of winter tires, be sure to have your tire pressure checked regularly in winter. Cold climates tend to deflate tires more quickly.
2. Battery checks: Of all components of your vehicle, your battery might hate winter the most. Many cars take longer to "warm-up" in winter, and some struggle to start at all. Before winter starts, make sure you have a fully charged battery.
3. Wipers: During snowstorms, wipers get a real workout. If you haven't replaced your wiper blades in a while, you'll want to grab a new set before the harshest of weather hits.
4. Fluid checks: You'll want clean oil, coolant, and a full tank of gas for winter. If you know the weather is about to turn, then it's time to go in for that pre-winter fluid check. If you're short on any of your vehicle's vital fluids, make sure to take care of this before cold weather hits.
5. Exterior: Winter weather can do some damage to the exterior of your vehicle. That's one reason people with garages choose to really use them in winter. If you don't have a garage, a weather tarp or other covering can help protect your vehicle from the elements.
