Specs at a Glance
Already an impressive midsize sedan, the Kia Optima has been upgraded for 2019 with refreshed exterior styling and new standard safety features. If you're shopping for a new car with a high-end interior, cutting-edge tech, and a smooth, comfortable ride, here's what you need to know about the similarities and differences between the Optima S, which is one step up from the base model, and the EX, which is one step down from the top-of-the-line trim.
What’s the Difference in Performance Between these Trims?
The Optima S is equipped with a 185-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. With the EX, you get a 178-hp turbo-four with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. You'll get 24/33 city/highway miles per gallon with the S engine and 27/37 with the EX powertrain. Both come standard with front-wheel drive and four selectable driving modes (Normal, Smart, Eco, and Sport).
Optima S and EX: Do they Differ in Appearance?
These trims are virtually identical in exterior appearance, and the changes from the 2018 model year are relatively minor. Although both vehicles received newly designed wheels, the EX is upgraded with a 17-inch style while the S gets 18-inch alloy wheels. Both vehicles have refreshed projector-beam fog lights, dual exhaust, LED taillights, and gloss black exterior trim. Both the Optima S and EX have a hands-free trunk, which makes it easy to load and unload cargo.
The Difference in Features
The Optima S is generously equipped with comfort, tech, and safety features. Active driver assist systems, newly standard on the vehicle for 2019, including a rearview camera, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, forward collision avoidance assistance, rear parking sensors, lane change, and lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and driver drowsiness monitoring.
As for tech, it comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, a six-speaker audio system, and a USB port. The S trim is outfitted with leather-trimmed upholstery, two-zone automatic climate control, and a power-adjustable driver's seat.
The EX trim includes all the features of the S model plus leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, and three additional USB ports.
