Four Common Reasons Why Your Car Isn't Accelerating Properly
Nobody likes to drive a car that performs sluggishly or doesn't accelerate properly. Not only is it annoying, but it can be dangerous if you're trying to merge onto a highway or drive up a steep hill. There are several reasons why a vehicle might start to accelerate slowly, and we're going to take a look at four of the most common causes of this problem.
A Dirty Mass Airflow or Oxygen Sensor
The mass airflow and oxygen sensors monitor the air-fuel mixture in your vehicle. Unfortunately, they tend to get dirty, which can cause issues such as poor gas mileage and sluggish acceleration. A dirty mass airflow sensor can usually be cleaned, but a dirty oxygen sensor will need to be replaced. The good news here is that these dirty sensors will trigger the "Check Engine" light on your dashboard, so you should know when there is a problem and be able to get your vehicle into the shop.
A Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor
The throttle position sensor monitors the opening angle of the throttle valve and relays the data to your engine's computer. The computer then makes the necessary adjustments to keep your vehicle running efficiently. When this sensor malfunctions, the computer doesn't receive the proper data, and your vehicle's performance suffers. This isn't that difficult to repair, but it is beyond the capability of your average vehicle owner. If you want this issue fixed properly, bring it to a repair shop.
A Clogged Fuel Filter
The fuel filter keeps dirt, debris, sludge, and other impurities out of your fuel. When it gets dirty, all of these impurities build up in your engine. A clogged fuel filter will even prevent your engine from receiving enough fuel, which will affect your acceleration and gas mileage. Replacing the filter will fix this problem.
Dirty Air Filters
Dirty air filters will prevent your engine from receiving enough airflow, which will cause some minor yet annoying problems. Air filters need to be replaced periodically, so consult your owner's manual to find out when you're due for a replacement.
